Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay Historical Day Tour consists of visiting the following sites:

Point of Human Origin

The Point of Human Origins is an archaeological site located in Mossel Bay, South Africa. It has early evidence for modern human behavior and is a world-renowned archaeological site. This site is a cave that was once inhabited some 200,000 years ago. The cave exhibits stunning views of the ocean and is home to old stone tools and other archeological findings.

This tour takes around 1.5 hours. The only access to Cave 13B is via a series of steep wooden steps and boardwalks (some 200 stairs in each direction). The climb back up can be taxing unless you’re mildly fit.

Dias Museum

The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex is the second biggest provincial museum affiliated to the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in South Africa. The museum complex is home to the famous 500-year-old Post Office Tree and a life-size replica of the Dias Caravel, the original ship with which Dias arrived in Mossel Bay. The museum complex consists of several attractions such as The Granary, The Shell Museum, The Maritime Museum, The Post Office Tree, Ethno-Botanical Garden, The Fountain, Munrohoek Cottages and Malay Graves.

Cafe Gannet (lunch stop for own account)

Café Gannet is a seafood restaurant and is acclaimed for local seafood specialties. Coastal oysters, black mussels and Mossel Bay Sole are delivered daily from the harbor to make a delectable and varied a la carte menu, which includes pizza, salads, meat dishes, light lunches and Rainbow Cuisine.

Here you can also opt for a St Blaize Gin Tasting. (own account)

Cape St Blaize Lighthouse

Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse is a lighthouse that was commissioned as a result of the number of vessels using the bay as safe anchorage and to replenish supplies. The lighthouse was built in 1864 and is one of the only two lighthouses manned 24 hours daily on the South African Coastline.
